Heat Wave

K Art is pleased to present Heat Wave, a group exhibition highlighting recent works by Matthew Kirk, Saif Azzuz, and established artist, G. Peter Jemison. This is Kirk’s and Azzuz’s first showing with the gallery. Each artist uses unconventional materials in their large-scale practice to speak on pollution, plant life, and climate change, ultimately expressing hopes and fears for the coming generations. Despite differences in studio locations and artistic approaches, a heat wave across the nation can be felt equally. Heat Wave opens July 6th and runs to October 21st, 2023.

Matthew Kirk, born in Arizona and raised in Wisconsin, works in Queens, New York. Formerly working behind the scenes as an art handler, his experiences witnessing a general lack of environmental consciousness in the art world became integral to his practice. Tons of lumber, plastic, and cardboard used for artwork transportation – not to mention the gas emissions – stood out to the artist. Now, he uses sheetrock and plywood as the media for his work.

Saif Azzuz is based in the Bay Area of California, a setting significant to his documentative craft. This western state is home to the Yurok reservation, where efforts to eliminate invasive foreign plant species have gone underway. Consequently, through traditional burning techniques, the native plants are experiencing a resurgence, paralleling the rise in land health and traditional Yurok customs. Azzuz uses shellac, a natural thermoplastic secreted by female lac bugs, to document daily native flower drawings. These eventually led to his monumental paintings, which continued these conversations and demanded recognition. Much like Kirk and Jemison, he has a family and now hopes that these small efforts will provide a healthy environment for the next generation.
